Syrah

THEY SAY SYRAH SMELLS LIKE DUSTY ROSES.

Syrah is a dark-skinned grape. The skin is thick and almost black. A rhône varietal, synonymous for shiraz in Australia, it goes perfectly with barbeque. A little lighter than a cab but generally more tannic than a zin...

It thrives in the Dry Creek Valley climate, loving the heat and sunshine.

I love syrah! Try some. It's a good one to lay down for a few years as it will soften and get more complex over time...

Thomas George

Small producer of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel on the former site of Davis Bynum Winery.

The people here are as awesome as the wine. Their wine club has great perks. And they rent out their facilities for private parties. And they have a cave!

This is a nice place to bring a picnic or snacks. They also have several cottages available for rent.

Another reason to join their wine club...

Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves

A seriously stunning property with some of the most friendly staff and HUGE zins. They're so big that I'm drinking mine that I bought 8 years ago and they're amazing. Great place to picnic, take photos and sit in the sun. Cool cave...and I mean cool--bring a sweater. Love this place.

Preston Farm & Winery

Frankly, any winery that has lazy cats roaming the property is a place I want to be. Fortunately, the wine is great too. They even have a little shop where you can purchase homemade sourdough bread, cheese and olive oil and enjoy it on one of their many picnic tables. With cats. They have a great red table wine, mostly syrah, and the place is quaint. One Sundaya month, old Mr. Preston fills jugs in the cellar from a barrel. Jug wine! Keep your jug and get a new sticker each month. It's like a badge of pride. Or a drinking problem. Fun to place on tables if hosting a large party. They have a certified organic garden too. A very simple place with easy to drink wine.

Martinelli Winery

The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in Sonoma County since the late 1800's. Their finer wines are mostly available exclusively to their mailing list--and it's a worthy list to join. Some of the best wines I've ever poured are made by Martinelli. 3360 River Rd. Windsor, CA 95492
